Our Summary

This Huckleberry Insurance review looks at the coverage options, regions served, and reputation of the company. Huckleberry considers itself a technology company first, making small business insurance available faster and easier for business owners.

Company Overview

Huckleberry was founded in 2017 in San Francisco. In 2021, it moved its main headquarters to New York City with a second headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. It’s still a small insurtech company with less than 50 employees. The company has growth plans and looks to double its staff in 2022.

Geographic Representation

Huckleberry serves 46 of the 50 states. It currently doesn’t operate in North Dakota, Ohio, Washington, and Wyoming. Look for expansion into these states in the near future.

Premium Costs

Huckleberry does not advertise rates. We attempted to go through the quote process for a business contractor generating $100,000 in revenue. The system would not give us a quote, saying it needed more information. Premiums will be contingent on the industry you work in, revenues, and claims history.

Underwriting Process

The Huckleberry system is pretty straightforward to use. The technology conducts a quick interview that gathers general information. In our test quote, it did require a tax identification number. At this point, the system told us that it needed more information to run a quote and that a representative would contact us.

AM Best Ratings

AM Best ratings help you determine if a company has the financial resources to pay the claims it may incur. AM Best is a third-party rating company that looks at the solvency of insurance companies. Huckleberry’s policies are underwritten by Markel, which was affirmed to have a bbb+ rating in 2021. This rating reflects some issues that AM Best sees with cash flow and cash reserves.

Complaint Index

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) maintains a complaint index for all insurance companies. This gives consumers an idea of whether or not a company has more or less complaints as would be expected for a company’s size. The average score is 1.0, with ratings above 1.0 demonstrating a more than expected number of complaints. Less than 1.0 is a favorable score meaning there are fewer complaints.

Huckleberry does not have a rating since its policies are underwritten by Markel. Markel had one complaint in 2020 with a 0.53 rating. It had no complaints in 2019 and 2018.

Reputation

Looking at a company’s reputation helps consumers understand what real customers experience when working with a company. Huckleberry has 276 reviews on Trustpilot, maintaining an Excellent 4.5-star score. In fact, 87% of reviewers gave Huckleberry a five-star review.

Huckleberry Insurance does not have a Better Business Bureau page at this time.

Concluding Thoughts

Getting business insurance should not be difficult. Huckleberry is committed to making the process easier by using insurtech to help simplify the process. While this is the company's goal, it is a little frustrating not to be able to get a quote straight away. That being said, the company has hundreds of happy customers on third-party review sites and gets kudos for its simplicity and reasonable pricing.

Methodology

CommericalInsurance.net employs its own independent research to come up with the details for reviews. We do this so that you can have as many insights as possible about a company so that you can make the best decision for your commercial insurance. We take into consideration the company’s history and where they serve. We want to highlight the appetite that a company has as this suggests where business owners can get the most competitive rates. Where possible, we include premium data. From there, we take into account formal complaints, and financial strength ratings along with public reviews painting a broad picture of the company’s reputation.
